How to Check for Worn Belts and Hoses

November 4th, 2019 by

Cars are complex pieces of machinery, and without routine maintenance, you could face costly repairs. For example, belts and hoses are big players in vehicle operation. Taking care of them helps the car smoothly.

Consider the timing belt, a part with teeth that helps with synchronization of the camshaft, crankshaft, and distributor. If the teeth are worn, and the engine is backfiring or stopping, the timing belt probably needs replacing. Look at the serpentine belts, which transfer power from the crankshaft to engine accessories. If these belts are cracked or split, and you hear a squealing noise, it’s time to replace them. Hoses transfer liquid, so you’ll want to make sure they aren’t cracked, split or have soft, brittle spots.
